This Product Has Only Been Tested on 6 Common Stainless Steel Alloys, e.g. 304, 316, as Well As Several of My Own Knife Blades & Firearms. (Exact Alloy Composition of Those Are Unknown). Also, the STAINLESS F/X™ Surface Activator, Although Completely Odorless, Can Cause Some Discoloration and/or Flash-Rust on Nearby, Exposed Ferrous Steel, Even by Indirect Contact. Always Work in a Well-Ventilated Area, Away From Any Tools or Fixtures Made From Bare Steel, to Dissipate Any Fumes and/or Mist That Would Cause Unwanted Staining or Rusting. Mask or Shield Any Areas or Components of Your Work-Piece That May Be Subject to Rust.
The Patina (STAINLESS F/X™), Itself Does NOT Have This Property, Just the Surface Activator. DO NOT MIX The 2 Products Together In The Same Container. Mixing Won’t Hurt Anything, But it Will Render the Patina Ineffective on Stainless Steel. It Is IMPERATIVE That The Surface Activator Be Applied to the Surface/s of the Stainless Steel Prior to the Application of the STAINLESS F/X™ Patina and Left Wet While Applying the STAINLESS F/X™.
And, the Stainless Steel Surface/s MUST be WET With The Surface Activator Before & During the Application of STAINLESS F/X™ Patina.
Coverage is Approximately 20-30 SQUARE FEET PER 16 OZ. KIT. This Patina Kit Will ALSO Work Beautifully on Mild Carbon Steel, With the Exact Color Reactions Achieved on Stainless. When Using on Mild Steel, a Clear-Coat or Sealer is Mandatory, Or It Will Eventually Just Turn to Rust.
Spray (Small, Short, Spritzing Spurts That Emit Droplets Work Best), or Apply w/ Dropper, Pipette, Sea-Sponge, Clean Rag, Etc. Rinse or Wipe Off Thoroughly & Dry With Clean, Dry Compressed Air. Done!

With 304 Stainless, you wouldn’t need a clear-coat. Adding a Gloss Clear-Coat would accentuate the patina colors & add a significant “Wow” Factor,though.

The bottle openers are Stainless Steel 304. We decided to use SS so we dont have to worry about rusting/oxidizing over time or a coating chipping off. I would like something other than the standard polished or brushed look, so we are exploring different surface finishes. Do you think a top coat would be durable enough to use as a bottle opener without chipping? These will be promotional items for a local brewery

Are the bottle openers SS or some other metal? If they’re SS, you won’t need to seal or clear-coat, but the patina offers no scratch resistance. Abrasion or Scuff-Resistance comes from a durable top-coat, like a ceramic clear or a 2-Stage Automotive Clear-Coat. If the bottle openers are something other than SS, a clear-coat is mandatory, to prevent oxidation. Thanks! Bill
