Clear-Coating Trick

Question from Maria:

”Hi Bill. We work in mild steel and usually clear coat our shiny, bare metal with an acrylic spray. Can any of your   patinas be applied over this clear coating without having to sandblast to remove the coating first? Thanks….Maria

Answer from Bill:

Hi Maria,

The STEEL F/X® Patinas Will Not Work Over Existing Clear-Coat, but you can add color to the cured Clear-Coat with the Metal Dyes.   When you use the Dyes over cured Clear-Coating, it’s always best to lightly roughen the surface of the existing clear before applying the STEEL F/X® DYES OR STAINS with a very fine grade of Scotchbrite® by 3M®, Steel Wool (#000 or #0000) or, 1200-Grit Sandpaper.   It Helps Greatly With the Bond of the Final Top-Coat of Clear.

Thanks!
Bill
