Custom Dye Colors – Tinting & Shading

QUESTION:
Hi Bill,
When using the Metal Solvent Dyes,  to change Tangerine Orange to a lighter Orange, what could I add to get the best results? The other color I am needing to change is Cobalt Blue to more of a Navy Blue.  Do you happen to have a color mixing chart available?
Thanks,
Kevin C.

ANSWER:
Hi Kevin,

To get a weaker shade of Orange, all you would add is straight Acetone.  It would still be translucent, allowing the polished steel to be seen.

To get a lighter shade of Orange, you would add a little White Dye, but that takes away some of the transparency of the dye.

To change Blue to a darker shade of Blue, (Navy Blue, for example), you would add a few drops of Black Dye.

Darkening a color is called, “Shading”.

Lightening a color is called, “Tinting”

You could pick up a standard ‘Color Wheel’ at any craft store or online.

A Color Wheel will show primary, secondary & tertiary colors, but won’t tell you how much or what to add to achieve a
custom color.   Some experimentation is always advised. A Color Wheel will give you some ideas on complementary colors, opposing colors and is pretty informative.
A good thing to have, really.   Shouldn’t cost more than $8 or $10 bucks.

Here’s how to make dark colors (shades). Adding the opposite color on an accurate CMY/RGB color wheel will darken a color. Or just add black.

  • Dark Magenta: Add a small amount of green or black to magenta.
  • Dark Red: Add a small amount of turquoise blue (cyan) or black to red.
  • Brown (dark orange): Add a small amount of blue or black to orange. Or mix red and green.
  • Olive Green (dark yellow): Add a small amount of violet-blue or black to yellow.
  • Dark Green: Add a small amount of magenta or black to green.
  • Dark Turquoise: Add a small amount of red or black to turquoise blue (cyan).
  • Dark Blue: Add a small amount of orange or black to blue.
  • Dark Violet-Blue: Add a small amount of yellow or black to violet-blue.
  • Dark Purple: Add a small amount of lime green or black to purple.
Hope that helps.
Bill
