DON’T USE SOLVENTS

steel preparation for patinas

QUESTION:  I am having some trouble with one of my favorite patinas not “sticking” in certain spots.  Any suggestions?  Brian B.

ANSWER:  (Note: This is one of the most common questions I receive.  Problems with the use of patinas are very rare, but can occur when a user ‘Adds’ a Step or ‘Omits’ a Step that is outlined in the instructions on the product container or in my videos).

Brian,
You’re probably using a solvent to ‘wipe down’ your steel.  Am I right?
If you watch my videos or read the instructions on the patina bottles, you will NEVER see me use solvents or advise to use solvents.
Solvents Leave an Oily Residue on the Steel, Even if You Can’t Feel it or See it.  Solvents contain Petroleum or Citrus Distillates and the Patinas are Water-Based.  OIL REPELS WATER.
If You Refrain from Using Solvents, you will have no problems at all.  If you need to remove oil, use a Powdered Cleanser like Ajax or Comet & Clean Water.  Or, better yet, use GRIME GIT’R™, which is on the site. That’s what I use when needed.
Check out the Post Below on ‘How to Check For Oil on Your Steel’ before patinas are applied.
Hope This Helps,
Bill
