Matching or Restoring Mill-Scale (Color)

restoring mill-scale color

Question by Luke:   Can your patinas restore the ‘Mill-Scale’ coloration to steel that has been polished?
Answer:
Hi Luke,
Creating a matching mill-scale finish chemically is a little tough, but doable.   I would use FLAME F/X™  AND  BLACK F/X™, along with some burnishing & possibly repeated applications to get the color range desired.   We can discuss it a little further if you’d like to give me a call.
Another way (if possible, given the location and structural integrity of the project) is to heat the polished areas to a cherry red, then let ‘air-cool’…the impurities in the carbon steel will naturally re-occur on the surface, producing a near-match for the mill-scale, also called fire-scale.
Thanks,
Bill
