Grades of Chemicals
Grade | Description |
---|---|
Agricultural Grade
This is one of the lowest grades of chemicals. Because the chemical is put into the dirt (usually for a fertilizer), there are very minimal requirements.
Tech / Industrial Grade
Technical/Industrial grade chemicals are produced with high purity for commercial or industrial use.
Food Grade
Food grade is often the same as tech/industrial grade but tested to comply with food safe standards, such as making sure there is no lead or other harmful materials in the chemical which would harm a human being if consumed.
FCC
The Food Chemical Codex is basically food grade with a little bit more stringent requirements such as chemicals having to be packed inside of a dedicated white room.
USP
US Pharmacopoeia grade chemicals are about the same standard as FCC and are acceptable for food, drugs or medicinal use.
Reagent Grade
Generally about the same purity as A.C.S. grade. This is suitable for most laboratory and analytical applications where highest purity is essential.
A.C.S.
A chemical grade of the highest purity that meets or exceeds purity standards set by the American Chemical Society.
