Restoring a Galvanized Steel Countertop

Question:

Mike A. asks:

”I have a galvanized metal counter top that some of the galvanizing has come off and there are also ring mark stains that I am not able to remove. I would like to refinish this top but don’t know exactly what to use. Looking for recommendations and products to restore the finish or alter the finish. 5/28/16

Answer:

Hi Mike,

You wouldn’t be able to restore the original galvanizing.   That is hot tank process that is only done by professional finishing/plating shops, as it’s very caustic & uses tin, zinc and a number of very dangerous chemicals.

There is a ‘Cold Galvanizing’ coating available that can be sprayed on or brushed on, but the color is not really even close to the original.   It’s more of a stop-gap protection for exposed steel.  It’s usually a medium to dark-gray color when dry & doesn’t have the ‘mosaic effect’ of hot-dip galvanizing.
Hot-Dipped Galvanized Steel.
         Hot-Dipped Galvanized Steel.
Cold Galvanizing Spray Coating.
      Cold Galvanizing Spray Coating.
You Can Alter the Coloration of the Core Metal, Which is Steel, by Applying a Rusting Patina, or Even a Patina That’s in the Blue/Violet or Blue-Black Range.   But, the Patinas Will Have Little to no Effect on the Galvanization. (Zinc)

What is Your Objective as Far as Color/s?   And, Remember:  After the Patinas Have Been Spplied & Neutralized With Water, the Counter-Top Has to be Clear-Coated With a Durable Finish That Can Hold Up Well to Wear and Tear.
A 2-Part (Catalyzed) Automotive Finish is Best.  Alternatively, you can use a “Bar-Topper” Epoxy Finish, but that works best on a perfectly flat (horizontal) surface.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Thanks,
Bill
