Hey Bill,

This is Kasey and I’ve got a question about dross removal.

I’m considering getting a 7 inch angle grinder. Is it more efficient for cleaning dross? What are the pros and cons? I always value your opinion and wanted to see what you had to say.

Hi Kasey,

I’ve got a 7″ & 9″ Angle Grinder. When I was first starting out in the plasma-cutting biz, I’ll bet I tried a 1,000 ways to clean dross efficiently & nothing I tried was all that great.

So, regarding the large Angle-Grinders…I don’t use ’em anymore. I Never use wire wheels, conventional grinding discs (carborundum), hammers, chisels, pneumatic tools e.g. Needle-Scalers or Air Hammers, etc. They’re all too slow, too dangerous (wire wheels, especially), too expensive and most of all — too time-consuming!

Since I started using the AVOS® (by NORTON®) Discs & Backing Pad on my 4-1/2″ Grinder, the problem of Dross-Removal no longer existed. The AVOS® Disc method is so incredibly fast, it will really surprises anyone who’s tried them.

My greatest reward is teaching & helping other metal artisans to produce finished products that are beyond the norm of painting or powder-coating. I truly love working in the lab, experimenting with what will work & developing new products. Many of my customers, in a very short time, have become masters of steel patinas on their own work and are producing some heirloom quality works of art!
